Screw functions

An extruder screw functions as a feeder, a conveyor and a mixer. The screw must take plastic granules and melt and mix them, before the material is conveyed out through the die. Different screw... [Pg.66]

The progressive cavity pump consists of a rotating cork-screw like sub-surface assembly which is driven by a surface mounted motor. Beam pump rods are used to connect the two. The flowrate achieved is mainly a function of the rotational speed of the subsurface assembly. There Is in principle very little that can go wrong with progressive cavity pumps. Progressive cavity pumps excel in low productivity shallow wells with viscous crude oils and can also handle significant quantities of produced solids. [Pg.231]

The thermostatic mortar P, whose function is described below, is a small electrical heating unit (1 5 cm. in diameter and 7 cm. long) kept constant at 180 . The temperature is kept constant by another Simmerstat. The mortal may be supported on its Simmerstat box or alternatively screwed on to the end of the furnace, a gap of 1 cm. being left between the furnace and the mortar in each case. The right-hand end of the mortar bore is only wide enough to take the drawn-out beak end of the combustion tube, which is thus held in place. [Pg.470]

The functions of the bulb in the inlet tube C are to reduce the danger of spurting and also the sucking back of the liquid in A the latter can be prevented by the timely opening of the screw chp on E. [Pg.1106]

An iajection mol ding machine is operated by hydrauHc power and equipped with an electric motor and hydrauHc pump. The maximum hydrauHc oil pressure is ca 14 MPa (2000 psi). A hydrauHc cylinder opens and closes the mold and holds the mold closed duriag iajection another cylinder forces the screw forward, thereby injecting the melt iato the mold. A separate hydrauHc motor turns the screw to plasticate, homogenize, and pressurize the melt. Control of these movements is a combined function of the hydrauHc and electrical systems (35—37). [Pg.141]

Lubricants. Lubricants are used to improve the melt flow, screw feeding, and mold release of nylons. Long-chain acids, esters, and amides are used together with metal salts, eg, metal stearates. Improved melt flow is mainly a function of molecular weight reduction during mol ding. Mold release is improved by waxes of limited compatibiHty with nylon, which migrate to and lubricate the mold surface. [Pg.274]

Required power is made up of two components, that necessary to drive the screw empty and that necessary to move the material. The first component is a function of conveyor length, speed of rotation, and friction in the conveyor bearings. The second is a function of the total weight of material conveyed per unit of time, conveyed length, and depth to which the trough is loaded. The latter power item is in turn a function of the internaf friction and friciion on metal of the conveyed material. [Pg.1915]

The displacement of the screw compressor is a function of the interlobe volume and speed. The interlobe volume is a function of rotor profile, diameter, and length. Table 4-1 provides some typical rotor diameters and corresponding L/d ratios. The interlobe volume can be expressed by the following equation. [Pg.99]

A scram causes the control rods to drop into the core, absorb neutrons and stop the chain reaction. Some rods perform both controlling and scram functions. The control rods are raised to increase the neutron flux (and power) or lowered to reduce it by magnetic jacks (W and CE) or a magnetic "clamshell" screw (B W). The chemical volume and control system (CVCS - not siiown) controls the water quality, removes radioactivity, and varies the reactivity by controUing the amount of a boron compound that is dissolved in the water - called a "poison." Thus, a PWR coiiirols reactivity two ways by the amount of poison in the water and by moving the control rods. [Pg.208]

Most rotary screw compressors use lubricating oil within the compression space. This oil is injected into the compression space and recovered, cooled, and recirculated. The lubricating oil has several functions... [Pg.491]

The mixer-extruder combination unit shown in Figure 38.5 combines the functions of a mixer and screw conveyor. This type of mixer is used for mixing viscous products. [Pg.570]

By ab initio MO and density functional theoretical (DPT) calculations it has been shown that the branched isomers of the sulfanes are local minima on the particular potential energy hypersurface. In the case of disulfane the thiosulfoxide isomer H2S=S of Cg symmetry is by 138 kj mol less stable than the chain-like molecule of C2 symmetry at the QCISD(T)/6-31+G // MP2/6-31G level of theory at 0 K [49]. At the MP2/6-311G //MP2/6-3110 level the energy difference is 143 kJ mol" and the activation energy for the isomerization is 210 kJ mol at 0 K [50]. Somewhat smaller values (117/195 kJ mor ) have been calculated with the more elaborate CCSD(T)/ ANO-L method [50]. The high barrier of ca. 80 kJ mol" for the isomerization of the pyramidal H2S=S back to the screw-like disulfane structure means that the thiosulfoxide, once it has been formed, will not decompose in an unimolecular reaction at low temperature, e.g., in a matrix-isolation experiment. The transition state structure is characterized by a hydrogen atom bridging the two sulfur atoms. [Pg.111]
