Scouring wear

In chemical process engineering, the most important instances of erosion are those where the fluid contains solid particles. If the fluid is a liquid, this type of wear is called hydroabrasive wear or scouring wear, and with gaseous fluids, it is called jet wear. In both types of wear, plowing is active as the essential mechanism, and with steeper angles of impact, there is an additional component causing destruction of the material. Other modes of wear are also encountered when handling slurries. As shown in Fig. 15, these include abrasion-corrosion (the most severe wear mode), scouring wear, abrasive metal-to-metal wear (crushing and grinding), high-velocity erosion, low-velocity erosion, saltation wear (rapid wear caused when particles are moved forward in a series of short intermittent bounces from a bottom surface), and cavitation. [Pg.70]

Textiles. Sorbitol sequesters iron and copper ions in strongly alkaline textile bleaching or scouring solutions (see Textiles). In the case of slurries, the wear is accelerated by the very nature of the abrasive and erosive particles. Abrasive wear in polyethylene occurs when the surfaee of a sample is removed by contact with a counterface with which it is in relative motion. The surfaces of the polymer and the counterface are always rough to some extent, either by design or due to the inescapable consequences of fabrication. Thus there are always asperities that protrude above the level of the surrounding surface. It is these asperities that make contact and are sites for ductile tearing failure. Asperities may be sharp and incisive, as in the case of those found on inorganic counterfaces, such as stainless steel and emery paper, or rounded and deformable, as in the case of those found on polymer surfaces. Sharp asperities cut and scour surfaces smooth ones act by adhesion to viscoelastically shear the surface. [Pg.195]
