Time the time spent cleaning and soaking the membrane is vital to the overall success of cleaning. Sufficient time must be devoted to the cleaning process to ensure that the cleaning solution has time to penetrate foulants and scale and that the recirculation flows scour as much of the debris off of the membranes as possible. [Pg.269]

Additionally, the surfactant properties of filmers reduce the potential for stagnant, heat-transfer-resisting films, which typically develop in a filmwise condensation process, by promoting the formation of condensate drops (dropwise condensation process) that reach critical mass and fall away to leave a bare metal surface (see Figure 11.2). The purpose of scouring is to reduce to an acceptable level the amounts of fats, waxes, oils and dirt present. Apart from the aesthetic benefits of a clean substrate, the major technical reason for scouring is to improve the extent and uniformity of absorbency for subsequent processes, especially coloration. In theory, cross-flow is a continuous operation, as the scouring process keeps the membrane surface free of foulants. In practice, however, the scouring action of cross flow is not always enough to prevent all fouling and scaling.
