Pesticide use was not Carson s chosen topic. She preferred to author works that simply fostered a deeper appreciation of nature. A shy and soft-spoken woman, Carson wrote with an Albert Schweitzer-like reverence for life. All was sacred to her. Her style was lyrical, vivid, and romantic, falling mostly within the nature-writing tradition. She gave her creatures anthropomorphic characteristics, set them in dramatic situations, hoping, she said, to make animals in the woods or waters, where they live, as alive to others as they are to me. ...

Another great person who also won a Nobel Peace Prize was Dr. Albert Schweitzer, a German doctor who, like Mother Teresa, also selflessly served the poor and sick. Schweitzer dedicated himself to the people of Africa. In Africa, he built a hospital and a leper colony, a refuge for those who had been rejected by society. Again, he was not the first to offer care and comfort for the sick and suffering. But he certainly was great. 

Greatness comes in many forms, and we are lucky to have numerous examples of greatness upon which to model our lives. Some great people are those who were able to be the first to accomplish something marvelous, while others, like Mother Teresa, Albert Schweitzer, and Harriet Tubman, are great because they worked tirelessly to ease the suffering of their fellow human beings.

The experiences of Albert Schweitzer are recounted, in that when he established his hospital in Gabon, in Africa in 1913, the natives there were noted to be free of cancer. Vegetarians, their two main items of diet were cassava and millet. In June and July of 1923, letters from three English doctors appeared in the British Medical Journal noting the absence of cancer among natives in various parts of Africa who had not had contact with Europeans. Again, the diet was cassava and millet with very little protein. 

In this connection, it is interesting to note that Albert Schweitzer devoted his medical dissertation to the task of proving wrong his medical colleagues who have diagnosed Jesus as paranoid, and to establishing, by what he calls an "impartial examination of the historical record, that Jesus was mentally healthy. In a 1958 publication, famed African physician Dr. Albert Schweitzer, stated that for several decades his hospital at Lamberene in Gabon did not see a single case of cancer among the cassava-eating tribes. This was attributed to the fad that the natives in the Lamberene area obtain 80 to 90% of their calories from cassava, the tubers of which contain about 0.5% of a nitriloside. 

Humanitarian. Developing countries need help and many developed countries have the knowledge and resources to help. The challenge of a difficult task and the moral uplift that comes only from doing for others can serve to temper and balance the affluence of American life as exemplified in the late Albert Schweitzer s dictum "It is only giving that stimulates."...
