Psychedelics (LSD) and other psy-chotomimetics such as mescaline and psilocybin can induce states of altered awareness, or induce hallucinations and anxiety, probably mediated by 5-HT2A receptors. Overactivity of these receptors may also play a role in the genesis of negative symptoms in schizophrenia (p. 238) and sleep disturbances. 

Major depression, bipolar syndromes and schizophrenia are common and often severe mental illnesses. All three of these tend to have an onset in late adolescence or young adulthood. Major depression is characterized by persistent low mood and decreased interest and pleasure, as well as physical and psychological symptoms, including sleep disturbance. 

Depression and anxiety are found to be major biochemical problems, as most likely are other emotional or mental disturbances, even schizophrenia. It is a newly unfolding and exciting field. These disturbances are being fonnd to be related to sleep disorders, which in tnm are related to biochemical imbalances. Compounding the difflcnlty is not getting enough sleep in the first place.
