Schizophrenia decanoates

Intramuscular (IM) Into skeletal muscle. This route is used to deliver depot antipsychotic drugs like fluphenazine and haloperidol decanoate, which are used in the treatment of schizophrenia. 

Psychotic disorder- For the treatment of psychotic disorders (eg, schizophrenia). Haloperidol decanoate is for patients who require prolonged parenteral antipsychotic therapy.

The annuahzed relapse rate for patients with chronic schizophrenia treated with haloperidol decanoate 50 and 100 mg per month is 75%. 

Twenty-three patients were enrolled in a placebo-controlled study of evening primrose oil in schizophrenia. During the treatment phase, patients were given 8 capsules of Efamol in addition to their normal mediea-tion. Seizures developed in 3 patients, one during treatment with plaeebo. The other two patients were taking evening primrose oil, one was reeeiv-ing fluphenazine decanoate 50 mg once every 2 weeks and the other flu-phenazine decanoate 25 mg once every 2 weeks with thioridazine.

The results of a study of the use of fluphenazine decanoate in the treatment of chronic schizophrenia have been discussed. Fifty-two patients were given intramuscular injections of 25 mg fluphenazine decanoate at intervals of 10 days for periods of between 213 and 312 days. All previous medication was withdrawn. 

A study is reported of the use of a depot preparation of fluphenazine decanoate in the management of acute episodes of schizophrenia.
