SBR polymerization

Chemistry of SBR. There are three steps in the manufacturing of SBR polymerization, monomer recovery and finishing. The polymerization step determines the basic characteristics of SBR, whereas the product form (latex or dry rubber, oil extended or not) depends on the finishing step. [Pg.585]

Although the early literature described the application of a tubular reactor for the production of SBR latexes(1), the standard continuous emulsion polymerization processes for SBR polymerization still consist of continuous stirred tank reactors(CSTR s) and all of the recipe ingredients are normally fed into the first reactor and a latex is removed from the last one, as shown in Figure 1. However, it is doubtful whether this conventional reactor combination and operation method is the most efficient in continuous emulsion polymerization. As is well known, the kinetic behavior of continuous emulsion polymerization differs very much according to the kind of monomers. In this paper, therefore, the discussion about the present subject will be advanced using the... [Pg.125]

The polymerization process parallels the emulsion process used for styrene-butadiene rubber. Either a hot or a cold process can be used, with the cold polymerization providing the same improved processing and vulcanizate properties as seen in SBR. Polymerizations are carried to 70-80 percent conversion and terminated to avoid gel formation. The latex must be stripped to remove unreacted butadiene and acrylonitrile. [Pg.708]

The addition reaction of organolithium compounds easily proceeds especially to intramolecular carbon-carbon double bonds (3.17) or to conjugated double bonds. The latter addition reactions proceed continuously. These reactions are utilized in butadiene and SBR polymerization and the organolithium compound is mostly used... [Pg.39]
