Rankinc, William John Macqunrn (1820-1872) Savery, Thomas (1650-1715)... [Pg.1289]

By 1608 Captain Thomas Savery exploited these principles with a patented steam pump. Alternately admitting pressurized steam into a vessel forced water upward through a one-way (check) valve, while the... [Pg.1083]

Thermodynamics first emerged as a science after the construction and operation of steam engines in 1697 by Thomas Savery and in 1712 by Thomas Newcomen in England. Later, Carnot, Rankine, Clausius, Kelvin, Gibbs, and many others developed formulations of thermodynamic principles for describing the conservation and conversion of energy. [Pg.1]

A number of steam-operated devices were designed, experimented, and modified since its inception. The contributions of a number of persons, viz. deUa Porta, de Cans, Boyle, Marriotte, Otto von Guericke, Dennis Papin, and Thomas Savery, toward the stody of air and steam were invaluable for the invention of the steam engine. The first steam-operated device designed professionally for practical purpose is the pulsometer pump by Thomas Savery in 1698. This was a steam-operated pump used for excavation in mines. Saveiy s steam pump had no moving parts. Steam was admitted to an empty chamber and condensed. The... [Pg.28]

In 1650, Thomas Savery invented a steam engine to pump water out of coal mines. [Pg.1181]

Savery pmnp (Thomas Savery) Savery s pump was impractical to build, but it served as a prototype for Thomas Newcomen s steam engine. [Pg.2034]

Yet, even though the steam engine has been around for over a century -it was first introduced by Thomas Savery in 1698 - the scientific principles underlying its operation are not established yet. [Pg.1]
