Satiety factors

Our hunger is intermittently relieved by eating, and our need to eat is suppressed by inhibitory impulses, so-called satiety factors . Satiation is the feeling of fullness and well-being that controls the interval to the next meal. The front end of the body (eyes, nose, taste buds and forebrain) tends to increase food consumption, but the back end (liver and lower GI tract), which must cope with the ingested food, mainly signals satiation to terminate eating behaviour. [Pg.55]

Defining the feedback signals, the so-called satiety factors , is an ongoing (pharmaceutical) quest. Some of the best-known and most likely candidates are shown in Table 3.1. [Pg.59]

Subsequent work revealed that the "satiety factor" is a protein called Jeptinand that its target is a receptor in the hypothalamus. Attention to the cause of human obesity has focused on changes in the structure of the Jeptin receptor, defects in the mechanism of transport of serum leptin to the brain (Schwartz ef aL, 1996 Caro et al., 1996), and on mutations that affect the signaling proteins that respond to the leptin receptor... [Pg.381]
