A model of the dynamics of phytoplankton populations based on the principle of conservation of mass has been presented. The growth and death kinetic formulations of the phytoplankton and zooplankton have been empirically determined by an analysis of existing experimental data. Mathematical expressions which are approximations to the biological mechanisms controlling the population are added to the mass transport terms of the conservation equation for phytoplankton, zooplankton, and nutrient mass in order to obtain the equations for the phytoplankton model. The resulting equations are compared with two years data from the tidal portion of the San Joaquin River, California. Similar comparisons have been made for the lower portion of Delta and are reported elsewhere (62). [Pg.183]

Boron accumulates in both aquatic and terrestrial plants but it does not seem to biomagnify in the food chain. Boron does not biomagnify in aquatic food chains and has low potential to accumulate in aquatic organisms, as judged by studies in the San Joaquin River, California,... [Pg.64]

Aquatic organisms were impacted by diazinon water concentrations between 0.3 and 1.2 jig/L effects included lowered emergence and elevated drift of stream insects (0.3ttg/L), reduced fecundity of marine minnows (0.47 ixg/L), accumulations in freshwater teleosts (0.55 p,g/L), and daphnid immobilization (1.0p.g/L) and death (1.2p,g/L). These comparatively low levels are of concern because transient peak water concentrations of 4.0-200.0 ttg diazinon/L have been recorded near diazinon sheep-dipping sites in England, and 36.8 ttg/L in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River, California. For protection of sensitive aquatic organisms, a water diazinon level should not exceed 0.08 p-g/L. This value represents a safety factor of about 4 over the lowest recorded adverse effect level of 0.3 pg/L. For protection of freshwater aquatic life, an average 4-day concentration of 0.04 pg diazinon/L is recommended, provided that this value is... [Pg.241]

Two major rivers in California influenced by a Mediterranean climate are the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River. The Sacramento River drains 72,132 km with a relief of 4,317 m. Mean discharge is 650 m /s with peak flows in the winter and early spring and with minimum flows in the late summer and early fall. The San Joaquin River drains 83,409 km with a relief of 4,418 m. Mean discharge is 130 m /s with peak flows in spring and low flows in late summer and fall. Population density is 24 people/km in the Sacramento River basin and 29 people/km in the San Joaquin basin. Agriculture in the Central Valley of California that encompasses parts of both basins is the primary user of water in both basins [1]. [Pg.57]

As an example of the application of the equations proposed herein, consider the phytoplankton and zooplankton population observed at Mossdale Bridge on the San Joaquin River in California during the two years 1966-1967. Mossdale is located approximately 40 miles from the confluence of the San Joaquin and the Sacramento Rivers. The data presented below have been supplied to the authors by the Department of Water Resources, State of California (64), as part of an ongoing project to assess the effects of proposed nutrient loads and flow diversions on the water quality of the San Francisco Bay Delta. A more complete report of this investigation is forthcoming (62). [Pg.175]
