Toward the end of July 1778, almost a decade since he d first met the Bal-samos, Count Casanova s dismissive words came back to haunt him when he again bumped into the couple. This time the roles were reversed in Casanova s home city of Venice, Giuseppe was the count, and Casanova the vagabond. [Pg.50]

Internal security was little better. Most of the cells had fallen into disrepair, making them unsafe and unsuitable for housing a prisoner of Bal-samo s celebrity. Besides, the internal layout of the fortress was not designed to keep prisoners isolated from each other, still less from their jailers. Yet this was what the papacy demanded for the new inmate. How, for example, could Doria hide Balsamo from other prisoners at the communal daily mass in the prisons narrow central chapel The legate decided for the moment to exclude him from formal worship altogether. This could be... [Pg.221]

Lucretius (Titus Lucretius Caras, 99 BCE - 55 CE) of Rome wrote a poem, De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things) (24) in which he described the atomic theory of Epicums of Samos (342-271 BCE). For Epicurus, atoms were indivisible, invisible, and indestmctible, and they differ in size, shape and weight. He believed that a void exists because there can be no motion of the atoms without it. The motions of atoms included the downward motion of free atoms because of their weight, swerve, the deviation of atomic motion from straight downward paths, and blow, which results from collisions and motion in compoimd bodies. Lucretius called atoms poppy seeds, bodies, principals, and shapes (25). [Pg.31]

Mr. Henhy Chance, one of the highest authorities on this subject, remarks, that to lay down any standard proportions for window-glass is almost impossible, as no two manufacturers use the same and even in tho samo works the melting powers of the furnaces may so far differ as to render necessary, for the production of the samo glass, variations in the proportions of its clo-mente, Richardson and Ronalds give the following as the mixtures used in some English manufactories —... [Pg.213]

The neck or cap is now removed by supporting the cylinder on a chevalot or wooden rest, and turning the upper part two or three times in the curve of a bent iron heated to redness, as shown in Ffg, 163 a drop of water allowed to fell on the heated line produces fracture and separation of the cap,. Or, tho samo may bo done by wrapping round the end of tho cylinder a thread of hot glass, removing tjie thread, and applying a piece of cold iron to any part which the thread covered. [Pg.218]

The tuyeres are generally three in number, entering the blast furnaces in three different parts. Care is token, however, that although at tho samo level, they are not pieced in BUch a position that the different currents should come into contact with each other n the furnace. The drawing—Fig. 293—will illustrate their position. [Pg.420]
