Salvia species clerodanes from

We ve classified more than 550 diteipenoids (listed in Table 3 whith corresponding sources) from all the reported Salvia species which we ve divided into 2 categories. The first one contains the monocyclic and bicyclic diterpenoids including labdanes and clerodanes and related diterpenes. The second category concerns tricyclic and tetracyclic diterpenes including pimaranes and abietanes and related diterpenes. The clerodane type diterpenes are mainly represented by american species while abietane type are found in european and asian species. 

Four bicyclic type diterpenoids have been reported from Salvia species labdanes, neo-clerodanes and clerodanes, seco-clerodanes, rearranged clerodanes. 

Turkish Salvia species contain mainly abietane pe diterpenoids while the majority of Salvia from the American continent have clerodane type diterpenoids. ... 

Diterpenoids from Salvia and Rosmarinus belong to two main groups abietane and clerodane. In general, the diterpenoids with abietane skeletons usually occur in Asiatic and European species, whereas the most common diterpenoids in South American species are of the clerodane type (Al-Hazimi and Miana, 1994). 

A number of these compounds have insect antifeedant activity. The total synthesis of the substituted c/s-decalin (26) as an antifeedant has been reported. Clerodanes have previously been detected in Salvia (Labiatae) species. The gesnerohlins A and B, obtained from S. gesneraefolia, have been assigned the structures (27) and (28) although their absolute stereochemistry was not determined. A further series of clerodanes of uncertain stereochemistry has been isolated from Baccharis species, including bacrispine (29) from B. crispa and the malonate ester (30) from B. tricuneata. ...
