Sale of drugs

Discuss the laws governing the manufacture, distribution, and sale of drugs. 

The top 10 pharmaceutical companies in July 2007 are shown in Table 1.4. These 10 companies account for almost half the global sales of drugs. Of significance is that, in the same period, the companies collectively spent in excess of US 40 billion in research and development (R D). This amount is more than 10% of their sales revenues, showing the importance of R D for these companies. 

The Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and rules 1945 have been passed with the objectives of regulating the import, manufacture, distribution and sale of drugs cosmetics. The Act and rules have been amended from time to time and the latest and major amendment was made in 1982. Schedules G H have been revised and new schedule X have been added and schedules E, I L have been deleted. According to the Act, now there are four categories of drugs ...

In Belgium, the distribution of analgesic nephropathy in patients with terminal renal insufficiency was well correlated with the sale of drugs containing either aspirin -I- phenacetin or paracetamol + caffeine (SEDA-7,75), and it is estimated that Belgium, after Australia, had the second highest incidence of analgesic nephropathy in the world. 

Two factors that may contribute to the increased abuse of medications are "doctor shopping" to get multiple prescriptions to treat a single physical or psychological ailment and the advertisement of prescription drugs over the Internet. Sales of drugs over the Internet are difficult for officials to track.
