A similar observation is noted for complexes containing partially (salalen) and completely (salan) saturated nitrogen centers (Fig. 8) [28]. Metal complexes of these ligands generally exhibit a c -p configuration and the metal center of these derivatives is chiral (A or A) (Fig. 9) [29, 30], Figure 10 depicts the structure of a (salalen)CrCl(H20) complex as determined by X-ray analysis.

In the same report Gay-Lussac, Thenard, and Vauquelin stated We have also obtained bromine, by the process described by M. Balard, by treating the mother liquors of the salt gardens (marais salans) of the plain of Aren which had been sent to us by our colleague M. d Arcet (29). 

Despite the considerable number of papers which have appeared on the structure of Schiff base metal complexes, a relatively small number of free ligands have been structurally characterized. In addition, only two SALAN derivatives are reported in the reviews collecting structure determinations published up to 1965.9 Therefore, no previous review on structural properties of free Schiff bases has been so far reported. Thus, these aspects will be fully described in the next subsections. However, it may be useful to report here the values quoted in ref. 9 of average C—N bond lengths for single, partial double and triple bonds (Table 2).

Recently, Egami and Katsuki developed an effective Fe(salan)-catalyzed oxidation of sulfides with H202 in water (Table 3.12) [168]. The reaction can be carried out using low catalyst loadings (1 mol%) in air and at room temperature (20 °C). High yields and enantioselectivities (81-96% ee) were achieved not only for alkyl aryl sulfoxides but also for alkyl alkyl sulfoxides.
