SUBJECT NUCLEAR REACTOR SAFETY DESIGN CRITERIA... [Pg.1]

PURPOSE. To establish nuclear safety design criteria applicable to the design, fabrication, construction, testing, and performance requirements of nuclear reactor facilities and safety class stmctures, systems, and components (SSCs) within these facilities. This Order applies to both new and existing reactor facilities. [Pg.1]

A graded approach shall be uses in the application of these nuclear safety design criteria to ensure that the depth of detail required and the magnitude of resources expended for the design are commensurate with each facility s programmatic importance and the potential environmental, safety, and/or health impact of normal operations. [Pg.6]

PRELIMINARY GUIDANCE FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR NUCLEAR SAFETY DESIGN CRITERIA (NSDC1... [Pg.37]

DISCUSSI ON. The reactor design should be fundamentally safe to ensure that the reactor is capable of being shutdown safely and adequately cooled following postulated accidents. In addition, the reactor facility should be designed to provide defense-in-depth needed to prevent or mitigate the consequences of accidents that could result in uncontrolled release of radioactive materials to the environment. The nuclear safety design criteria ensure that the reactor and the associated safety class SSCs perform their intended safety functions. [Pg.37]

The Nuclear Safety Design Criteria for Fire Protection require the effective implementation of a fundamental fire protection philosophy known as "defense-in-depth". As applied to fire safety, this principle requires each faci I ity to achieve an adequate balance of each of the following elements ... [Pg.42]

EXPLANATION OF CHANGE. To change the requirement in DOE 5480.30, NUCLEAR REACTOR SAFETY DESIGN CRITERIA, for EH concurrence with requested exemptions from the Order and update other EH responsibilities. These changes facilitate the Department s organizational transition necessitated by establishment of the NNSA. [Pg.73]

Initially, the desired safety design criteria should be established. Generally, if the expected result of brake pedal compression is proportional braking, this is the basis of the design criteria for this item. A loss of all brakes is the event that is least desirable and, therefore, must be considered in the evaluation process. [Pg.135]

Purification of the secondary sodium after a sodium-water reaction As the safety design criteria for a DBL, 4DEG (Double Ended Guillotine) breaks are specified based on the result of leak propagation analysis using conservative conditions... [Pg.524]

So if we say that the hazard analysis is the baseline document, then a preliminary hazard analysis (PHA) is the initial hazard assessment conducted on the system. It identifies safety-critical areas within the system and starts evaluating hazards and identifying safety design criteria and applicable safety requirements. [Pg.151]
