Safety considerations significance

Air Transport. Relatively small quantities of chemicals are transported by air, although availability of such service for the movement of samples, emergency shipments, and radioactive chemicals with a short half-life is important. Both economic and safety considerations impede the development of air carriage as a significant means of transporting a substantial volume of chemicals. [Pg.257]

The Simmons-Smith reaction " and its variants are widely used for the stereospecific synthesis of cyclopropane compounds. The methodology involves the use of copper-treated zinc metal (the zinc-copper couple) with diiodomethane to add methylene to a carbon-carbon double bond. Alternative use of diazomethane in catalytic reactions does not offer the same synthetic advantages and is usually avoided because of safety considerations. As significant as is the Simmons-Smith reaction for cyclopropane formation, its employment for organic synthesis was markedly advanced by the discovery that allylic and homoallylic hydroxyl groups accelerate and exert stereochemical control over cyclopropanation of alkenes (e.g, Eq. 21), and this acceleration has been explained by a transition state model... [Pg.571]

Because TNT is an explosive, safety considerations may impose constraints on potential treatment options. Photocatalytic oxidation offers several significant advantages in this regard. Oxidative destruction of the contaminants, rather than separation and concentration, helps prevent the buildup of potentially explosive residues. Low (ambient)-temperature operation circumvents potential problems associated with ignition sources located in close proximity to large quantities of explosive mixtures. These advantages have prompted several examinations of photocatalytic oxidation as potential treatment technology for use in association with TNT, as well as other explosive materials [21-28]. [Pg.251]

Recommendation 3 The committee recommends that DOE make a significant effort to address safety issues, and it supports DOE s plans to incorporate safety considerations into its various hydrogen research, development, and deployment programs. [Pg.151]

The safety considerations involve primarily the consequences of the high temperature of the system. No significant reactions of the battery components with air have been observed under conditions of rupture of cells at the operating temperature. A massive short circuit in a 20-kWh module which resulted in generation of 20 kWh of heat did not present any hazard, except for a 100 C increase of the temperature of the vessel. [Pg.411]

Amongst other things then, CHIP required that suppliers classified the substances they supplied according to the extent of hazard they represented to human health. It required they used the R-phrase rating system to do so and that suppliers state the appropriate R-phrase on the Safety Data Sheets they were obliged to provide when supplying chemicals or preparations for use at work. These measures were to be of considerable significance in relation to the future policy expectations... [Pg.126]

Tetranitromethane is of explosion whose oxygen balance is 49 % with explosion heat of 1,892 J/g. The pure tetranitromethane is of poor sensitivity that cannot be detonated by even 10 g special as booster. However, it is violently explosive when it is mixed with combustible material at almost zero oxygen balance, and it has a small critical diameter (thickness) and significant detonation and shock sensitivity. Such explosives are generally prepared when they are needed and the quantity addresses the requirement exactly regarding the safety considerations. Table 7.14 lists the detonation properties of tetranitromethane and certain combustible compounds at zero oxygen balance. [Pg.310]

By its very existence, a standard for occupational safety management systems carrying the approval of the American National Standards Institute takes on considerable significance. Such a standard becomes the minimum against which the adequacy of the safety management systems in place is measured. Membership on the ZIO committee broadly represents the interests of employers, labor, government, and the public. Assuredly, the standard will be much publicized. [Pg.390]

Lithium-ion Batteries, safety provides an overview of the safety considerations for Li-ion cells. Presently, Li-ion cells have a record of field failures or safety incident of one incident every ten million cells. The 18650 cell used in portable electronic applications contains sufficient energy to self-heat the cell to over 600°C. This does not include oxidation of the electrolyte solvent by the cathode oxide materials. AdiabaticaUy, including the electrolyte, the temperature is significantly higher. The causes of an incident include overcharge and heating from external sources. AU cells have safety devices such as PTC, CID, vents, and safety circuitry. An internal short is the most common trigger for a safety incident. [Pg.3]
