Every analytical laboratory, governmental, private, or university, has a standard set of procedures that provide both general and specific information to laboratory members. These fall into certain categories, including the laboratory s standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality assurance/quality control manuals (QA/QC manuals), procedural manuals, analytical method files, and laboratory information management systems... 

The procedural controls applicable for the preventive maintenance and repair of the hardware provide a mechanism for anticipating problems and, as a consequence, possible loss of data. Modem hardware usually requires minimum maintenance because electronic circuit boards, for example, are usually easily replaced and cleaning may be limited to dust removal. Diagnostic software is usually available from the supplier to check the performance of the computer system and to isolate defective integrated circuits. Maintenance procedures should be included in the organization s standard operating procedures. The availability of spare parts and access to qualified service personnel are important for the smooth operation of the maintenance program. 

Prior to establishing any relationship with a contractor, the quality assurance staff of a potential client must audit the contractor s facilities. During this audit, the contractor should be willing to provide a comprehensive tour of the facilities. Following the tour, the auditors need to review all of the contractor s standard operating procedures that may apply to their company s proposed project. In addition, the auditors need to review the quality improvement process being used by the contractor and the results of that process. Any concerns that have been identified during the audit should be discussed with the contractor at that time. 

Quality assurance QA) awareness The CSO s established procedures ensure both quality work and that current regulations are followed. A review of the CSO s standard operating procedure (SOP) manual and discussions with the QA manager will provide this information. Also, results from recently conducted regulatory agency audits should be reviewed. 

The second most important criterion is compatibility. Are the CRO s procedures and practices compatible with the sponsor s Is the chemistry between the CRO and sponsor good The sponsor should examine the CRO s standard operating procedures (SOPs) and talk with CRO staff to determine not only whether the CRO is meeting the requirements of good clinical practices (GLP), but also whether its practices closely parallel the sponsor s. CROs sometimes claim they can work according to the sponsor s SOPs , but the results are likely to be disappointing if the two companies have vastly different approaches or use incompatible technologies.
