It solely operates on the principle of photon emission. If P- or S-containing hydrocarbons are ignited in a hydrogen-rich flame, it gives rise to chemiluminescent species spontaneously which may subsequently be detected by a suitably photomultiplier device. Hence, FPD is regarded as a specific detector for P- or S-containing compounds.

The reaction between alkyl azides and isothiocyanates produces an isolable thiatriazoline (205 Scheme 43), which was thought to lose N2 on thermolysis to give an unstable intermediate (206), since this has apparently been trapped by a number of C=S containing compounds to give 1,2,4-dithiazolidine derivatives (76JHC883). Identification of N-, P-, and S-containing compounds is difficult, and those that are identified tend to be metabolic products, such as nucleotides and vitamins, released into the soil following the death of cells. Broadly, nitrogen is an integral part of the humic molecule, and is released as NH4 ions when the humic material is degraded. Phosphorus and sulfur are more commonly found as P and S esters, which can be released as orthophosphate and sulfate ions by the action of phosphatase and sulfatase enzymes, respectively.

Three bonds are apparently formed by Cu(i) in certain sulphides, the bonding in which is discussed in a later section of this chapter, and also by Ag(i) in a number of S-containing compounds, but here also there is often no simple interpretation of the bonding. In Ag3AsS3 there is both planar and pyramidal 3-coordination of Ag,( 9) while in Ag(thiourea)2Cl Ag has three approximately coplanar S neighbours but also one Cl at a rather large distance (2-95 A). 

A big advantage of W2C over the usual noble metal catalysts is the sulfur resistance. Noble metal catalysts get poisoned (inactive) by the presence of S-containing compounds in a short time. The sulfur resistance of W2C also allows its use as catalyst for the hydrodesulfiirization of thiophene.

The major (50%-75%) components of the malodorants in the skunk (Mephitis mephitis, Spilopgale gracilis, and Conepatus mesoleucus) defensive secretions are (E)-2-buten-1-thiol and 3-methyl-1-butanethiol. Other disulfides, thioacetates, and thiols are present in lesser amounts, and vary with species. In addition to the S-containing compounds, the alkaloid 2-methylquinoline has been identified in skunk secretions (Wood, 1990 Wood et al., 1991, 1993). Brief notes on examples of representative malodorants are given below.
