Rotor-based systems

Silica compounds are generally processed in conventional internal mixers, preferably with intermeshing rotors. These mixers are designed and optimized for carbon black-fiUed compounds in which mixing is based only on physical processes. When a silica-silane reinforcing system is used, additionally a chemical reaction, the sUanization, occurs. One of the main influencing factors of the silanization reaction is the concentration of ethanol in the compound as well as in the mixer [25,26]. As the silanization finally reaches an equilibrium, low concentrations of ethanol in the compound are expected to enhance the reaction rate. 

The equipment consisted of two Waters (Waters Corp. Milford, MA) M-45 pumps, a Waters 481 UV detector, a six-port Valeo sampling valve (A2L6P) with 0.08" holes in the valve body and rotor, a Rheodyne Model 7413 injection valve with a 1-pl loop, a valve interface box, and a Digital Equipment LSI-11/23-based microcomputer system. The microcomputer was used to control all valves, collect raw data from the UV detector, integrate the chromatogram, and store and plot results.

The MARS Microwave Synthesis System (Fig. 3.12 and Table 3.2) is based on the related MARS 5 digestion instrument and offers different sets of rotor systems with several vessel designs and sizes for various synthesis applications. 

Usually, proton transfer in acid-base equilibria is a fast process, but very hindered systems show slow kinetics. The equilibrium (equation 3) regarding 2,4-dialkylpyridines proceeds through locked-rotor and with intermediates of low entropy44.
