The coin-tap test is a widely used teclinique on thin filament winded beams for detection of disbonded and delaminated areas. Therefore, it was decided to constructed a new scaimer for automated ultrasonic inspection of filament winded beams. A turbine flowmeter consists of a straight flow tube containing a turbine which is free to rotate on a shaft supported by one or more bearings and located on the centerline of the tube. These devices are replacing the older tank and spiral-conveyor devices. Better provisions for speed and ease of fill and discharge (without powered rotation) minimize downtime to make this batch-operated device attractive. As a general nile, the direct-heat units are the simplest and most economical in construction and are emploved when direct contact between the solids and flue gases or air can be tolerated. Because the total heat load must be introduced or removed in the gas stream, large gas volumes and high gas velocities are usually required. The latter will be rarely less than 0.5 m/s in an economical design. Therefore, employment of direct rotating equipment with solids containing extremely fine particles is likely to result in excessive entrainment losses in the exit-gas stream. [Pg.1200]

Rotating equipment, except brick-hned vessels, operated above ambient temperatures is usually insulated to reduce heat losses. Exceptions are direct-heat units of bare metal construction operating at high temperatures, on which heat losses from the shell are neces-saiy to prevent overheating of the metal. Insulation is particularly necessary on cocurrent direct-heat units. It is not unusual for product cooling or condensation on the shell to occur in the last 10 to 50 percent of the cylinder length if it is not well insulated. [Pg.1200]

The distinguishing feature of this dryer is the bottom-screw drive, as opposed to a top-drive unit, thus ehminating any mechanical drive components inside the vessel. The bottom-driven screw rotates about its own axis (speeds up to 100 rpm) and around the interior of the vessel (speeds up to 0.4 rpm). The screw is cantilevered in the vessel and requires no additional support (even in vessel sizes up to 20 m operating volume). The dryer is available in a variety of materials of construction, including SS 304 and 316, as well as Hastelloy. [Pg.1217]

Construction is similar to that of other drum filters, except that vacuum is applied to the entire rotation. Before feeding slurry a precoat layer of filter aid or other suitable solids, 75 to 125 mm (3 to 5 in) thick, is apphed. The feed slurry is introduced and trapped in the outer surface of the precoat, where it is removed by a progressively advancing doctor knife which trims a thin layer of solids plus precoat (Fig. 18-126). The blade advances 0.05 to 0.2 mm (0.002 to 0.008 in) per revolution of the drum. Another generalization uses referential (material) symmetric Piola-Kirchhoff stress and Green strain tensors in place of the stress and strain tensors used in the small deformation theory. These tensors have components relative to a fixed reference configuration, and the theory of Section 5.2 carries over intact when small deformation quantities are replaced by their referential counterparts. The referential formulation has the advantage that tensor components do not change with relative rotation between the coordinate frame and the material, and it is relatively easy to construct specific constitutive functions for specific materials, even when they are anisotropic. [Pg.119]
