ROM instructions

The instructions for the operating system reside within a memory unit that can be read but not changed in any way — the read-only memory (ROM). 

The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM which contains two PC-based software packages the Mass Exchange Network (MEN) software and LINGO. The following sections summarize the basic features and installation instructions for the two packages.

In the installation instructions we assume that your CD-ROM drive is designated as drive D . If your CD-ROM drive has a different drive label, substitute your drive label where D is specified.

Start the WINDOWS Explorer and check there is 150-200 MBytes of space available on one of your hard disk(s). Follow one of the standard procedures for copying files from one to another directory. Consult the WINDOWS manual, or first study the Check it instructions for copying a file or directory given in the next section (2.5.6), if necessary. Select in your CD-ROM the directory NMRDATA or any of its subdirectories and copy it to disk D on your PC. The directory NMRDATA GLUCOSE 1D H and a few auxiliary directories therein (see 2.5.4) have already been created during installation of ID WIN-NMR. Answer the corresponding question for overwriting all files stored under the same name with yes. Use the WINDOWS Explorer) to inspect the newly created NMR data directory NMRDATA on your hard disk. Click on several items in this directory and familiarise yourself with the directory structure. 

A starting set of permanently "wired" instructions (in read-only memory, or ROM, or "boot block") is used to start the computer, or "boot" it after a power shutdown. These instructions address a few key harware locations (in core, on disk, etc.) in which other start-up data and instructions can be accessed. If this ROM, or the all-important "boot blocks" on a hard disk, are somehow destroyed, the computer cannot be started.

These are just a few of the features of this text that help provide a realistic, informative introduction to chemical processes. 

As you may or may not have figured out by now, I m fond of old sayings. There s another old saying that applies here If all else fails, read the instructions. The service manuals are your instructions for troubleshooting and service information. Almost every computer and peripheral made today has a set of service documentation in the form of books, service CD-ROMs, and Web sites. The latter of the three seem to be growing in popularity as more and more service centers get connections to the Internet. 

Instructions on how to use Polymath, MATLAB, FEMLAB, and Aspen can be found on the CD-ROM. 

Programs and worksheets to enhance the use of this book are on the accompanying CD-ROM and also on the Web site www.wHey.com/colIege/sa71dler, with instructions on how to use them. It is my intention to add to and update these programs on this Web site. . ... 

The CD-ROM program Kinetics Toolkit is an essential part of the main text. It is a graphical plotting application which allows data to be input, manipulated and then plotted. The plotted data can be analysed, for example to obtain the slope of a straight line. All data that are input can be stored in files for future use. Instructions for using the program are on the CD-ROM. Help files are available from the Help menus of the Kinetics Toolkit.
