Sail-related (raps—formed when the plastic salt formations deform into domelike structures under the overburden forces of the beds above the salt beds. Such plastic flowing (and bulging) of the salt beds deforms the rock formations above producing anticline structures and faults in the rock formation astride the domelike structures (see Figures 2-49 and 2-50). [Pg.251]

These remote ports bristled with the masts of sailing ships from all over the world, but mainly from Europe. The ships were drawn by one thing only thick layers of mineral deposits that lay fifty miles inland, hidden within bone-dry plateaus a few thousand feet above sea level. The rock, called caliche, held concentrated nitrogen, a substance essential for the waging of warfare and the growing of food. [Pg.75]

Some fish were caught in traps and weirs (brush fences) set in the mouths of rivers and harbors. Shore fishermen used nets or, when the tide had gone out, searched the rocks and sand for shellfish. [Pg.354]

On Monday, the 7th of the month, it dawned with fine weather, and the Captain gave orders to weigh and make sail. The Ahniranta went out first, as she was nearer the entrance, and the Capitana followed. We shaped a course S.E. in the line of the channel. At ten o clock the weather was clear, and Pedro Sarmiento was all day in the castle of the poop with the compass, marking out and verifying the chart he had made in the first discovery. As we were sailing in mid channel, with clear weather, and he was at a slight elevation, he was well able to verify both shores, and the islands, rocks, reefs, and entrances to channels.
