Rigor onset

Turbulence is generally understood to refer to a state of spatiotemporal chaos that is to say, a state in which chaos exists on all spatial and temporal scales. If the reader is unsatisfied with this description, it is perhaps because one of the many important open questions is how to rigorously define such a state. Much of our current understanding actually comes from hints obtained through the study of simpler dynamical systems, such as ordinary differential equations and discrete mappings (see chapter 4), which exhibit only temporal chaosJ The assumption has been that, at least for scenarios in which the velocity field fluctuates chaotically in time but remains relatively smooth in space, the underlying mechanisms for the onset of chaos in the simpler systems and the onset of the temporal turbulence in fluids are fundamentally the same. 

Malaria is transmitted by the bites of the Anopheles mosquitoes which introduce into the bloodstream one of four species of sporozoites of the plasmodia (Plasmodium falciparum, P. ovale, P. vivax or P. malariae). Initial symptoms of malaria are nonspecific and may resemble influenza and include chills, headache, fatigue, muscle pain, rigors, and nausea. The onset of the symptoms is between 1 to 3 weeks following exposure. Fever may appear 2 to 3 days after initial symptoms and may follow a pattern and occur every 2 or 3 days (P. vivax, P. ovale and P. malariae). Fever with P. falciparum can be erratic and may not follow specific patterns. It is not unusual for patients to have concomitant infections with P. vivax and P. falciparum. Falciparum malaria must always be regarded as a life-threatening medical emergency. 

Symptoms Onset of symptoms may be either abrupt or gradual. Inhalational exposure produces fever commonly in excess of 102 degrees F, rigors, sweats, myalgias, headache, pleuritic chest pain, cervical adenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, and generalized papular/ pustular eruptions. Acute pulmonary disease can progress and result in bacteremia and acute septicemic disease. 

Postmortem examination in fatal cases has shown immediate onset of extreme rigor mortis in the muscles of the thighs and legs, edema and intraalveolar hemorrhage in the lungs, cerebral edema, and liver and kidney damage. The risk of serious intoxication is increased during hot weather. ... 

Amineptine, which is available as an antidepressant in some countries in Europe, is a selective dopamine reuptake inhibitor. Amineptine is an old drug and was not subjected to the rigorous trial methodology applied to more recent antidepressants. There are suggestions that amineptine may be associated with early onset of antidepressant action, but this has not been thoroughly studied (Garattini 1997). Some concerns have been expressed that amineptine may be associated with abuse potential, and theoretically these two phenomena may be linked through the dopamine system because of an amphetamine-like effect. 

The Hopf bifurcation approach is a mathematically rigorous technique for locating and analysing the onset of oscillatory behaviour in general dynamical systems. Mullins and Sekerka (88, 89) analyzed the stability of a planar solidification interface to small disturbances by a rigorous solution of the equations for species and heat transport in melt and crystal and the constraint of equilibrium thermodynamics at the interface. For two-dimensional solidification samples in a constant-temperature gradient, the results predict the onset of a sinusoidal interfacial instability with a wavelength (X) corresponding to the disturbance that is just marginally stable as either G is decreased... 

The purple crystals are freely soluble in all common organic solvents except aliphatic hydrocarbons, in which they are only sparingly soluble. Solutions of the compound are highly sensitive to oxidation, and rigorous exclusion of air is necessary. The appearance of yellow material, insoluble in hydrocarbons, indicates the onset of oxidation. The purple solid is pyrophoric in air but is stable indefinitely when stored under an inert atmosphere at room temperature. 

The dynamic behavior of the carbon cycle and other complex systems may tend toward conditions of no change or steady state when exchanges are balanced by feedback loops. For example, model simulations of historical and projected effects of anthropogenic CO2 and CH4 emissions are usually based on an assumed carbon-cycle steady state before the onset of human influence. It is important to understand that the concept of steady state refers to an approximate condition within the context of a particular time-dependent frame of reference.
