Rigid rod-like chain

Despite its oxygen content, polyester (i.e., the aromatic polyethylene terephthalate) is degradation-resistant probably because of its rigid, rod-like chains. The same is true for polyamides in spite of their nitrogen content. [Pg.318]

The unique molecular packing of rod-like chains in liquid crystalline polymers (LCP) closely resembles the extended chain structure of highly oriented flexible chain polymers, suggesting that these materials are good candidates for barrier applications. Thermotropic LCP s, first developed in the early 1970 s, have been the object of much interest because of their excellent mechanical properties and ease of product fabrication. Preliminary observations have shown that a commercially available wholly aromatic thermotropic copolyester has gas permeability coefficients that are lower than those of polyacrylonitrile (4.). The intention of this brief survey has been to demonstrate that besides the "classical" aspects of isotropic polymer solutions and the amorphous or partially crystalline state of polymers, a broad variety of anisotropic structures exist, which can be induced by definable primary structures of the macromolecules. Rigid rod-like macromolecules give rise to nematic or smectic organization, while amphiphilic monomer units or amphiphilic and incompatible chain segments cause ordered micellar-like aggregation in solution or bulk. The outstanding features of these systems are determined by their super-molecular structure rather than by the chemistry of the macromolecules. The anisotropic phase structures or ordered incompatible microphases offer new properties and aspects for application. [Pg.20]

When a-helices form in synthetic polypeptides at the air-water interface, their rigid rod-like nature promotes side-by-side association of the molecules into highly ordered arrays or micelles, just as liquid crystalline structures form in solution at sufficiently high concentration (II). When such a monolayer is compressed on a Langmuir trough, the pressure rises when the surface area has reached a value expected for close-packed a-helices. At a pressure which appears a characteristic for the polymer, a transition is observed which is either an almost flat plateau in the pressure-area curve or simply an inflexion, flrst noted by Crisp (13), if the side chain is short (12). An inflexion also occurs if the side chain is inflexible. Normally the pressure rises again as the area is decreased, and in some instances further transitions are observed (14). [Pg.340]
