Rig-Veda

It is interesting to note that the Ayrians were the ancestors of many of the cultures of Asia and the Middle East. Their religion was coalesced with those of conquered Indo-Eurpean beliefs and evolved into Hinduism. The Rig Veda, which records some ancient tales of drugs, is a collection of hymns or vedas reminiscent of the Ayrian creed. 

The Fly Agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria) was the earliest fungi species recognized as having psychoactive potential. It was used by shamans in Siberia and in an area along the eastern part of the U.S.-Canadian border and may have inspired the world s earliest religious text, the Rig-Veda. Panther Caps (Amanita pantherina) contain psychoactive principles similar to those in Fly Agarics, which are drawn here about half natural size. 

The earliest religious document is a collection of 1,028 hymns called the Rig- Veda, written by Aryans who swept down into India from the North. The first of their four Vedas, it dates bade to at least the second millenium B.C and has been described as "the foundation of modern Hinduism. One hundred and twenty of its verses are devoted to praise of a plant called "Soma, which is characterized as being "rootless, "leafless, "blossomless and "from the mountains. ... 

R. Gordon Wasson first became acquainted with the Rig- Veda in 1962. He puzzled over the identification of "Soma, which had evaded scholars even though more than a hundred candidates had been proposed. (Most of the suggestions were ruled out by the passages describing it as "rootless, "leafless, etc.) Soon Wasson had a candidate ... 

As 1 entered into the extraordinary world of the Rig -Veda, a suspicion gradually came over me, a suspicion that grew into a conviction I recognised the plant that had enraptured the poets. As I went on to the end, as I immersed myself ever deeper in the world of Vedic mythology, further evidence seeming to support my idea kept accumulating. By Jove, I said, this is familiar territory ... 

This particularity about conditions under which it will grow helped Wasson explain why the "Soma of the Rig-Veda got "lost. ... 

Impressed by reports about Siberian use of Fly Agaric and feeling this mushroom was the "Soma of the Rig-Veda, Wasson tried self-experimentation ... 

Although usage isn t widespread, many people report disappointment with Amanita muscaria, saying that it s not all that nice, perhaps not even psychedelic. One experimenter noted that after his fourth trip on Fly Agaric he had to re-evaluate Wasson s SOMA. His feeling was that ingestion of Amanita muscaria was not better than Cannabis, opium, Datura or betel, all of which were already known in India by the time of the Rig-Veda. 

The earliest record of the possible use of Amanita muscaria as an ine-briant is in the ancient Vedic hymns of India. Urine drinking associated with mushroom intoxication is mentioned in the Rig Veda (ninth and tenth mandalas).

While in times that are more recent, the Persians made Soma from Asclepias acida, some scholars now suggest that the ancient recipes in the Rig Veda strongly imply that Soma was made from two stones or rocks (adrau) in the mountains (girau). It is quite likely that Soma had its tme source in metals before they used hallucinogenic plants like Asclepias acida and more recently. Cannabis...

While Sara was off giving her friend Joe a tour of the house, Sasha showed me a whole book on Syrian rue which argues that it was the source for the "soma" of the ancient Aryan Rig-Vedas. (Unfortunately, I didn t jot down the author and title.) Sasha chuckled over the fact that this author and Gordon Wasson (who has written on the theory that Soma was the agaric mushroom) have each constructed a theory which he himself believes is totally air-tight, and each airily dismisses the other s theory. They don t talk at conferences.
