Ricinoleic acid 12-hydroxyoleic acid, CH3-(CH2)5-CHOH-CHj-CH = CH-(CHj)r-COOH, a fatty acid. A/, 298.45, m.p. (a-form) 7.7 C, (P-form) 16.0 C, b.p.15 250 CR. a. is present in the acylglycer-ols of castor oil (Ricinus oil) where it accounts for 80-85 % of the total esterified fatty adds. It is also present in maize oil, wheat oil and various other vegetable oils. 

DOX adds molecular oxygen to produce 8-hydroperoxy derivatives with linoleic, oleic, vaccenic and ricinoleic acids with no rearrangement of double bonds. The 8-hydroperoxy linoleic and oleic acids may undergo enzymic isomerization to their 7,8-hydroxy derivatives in some fungi [6]. Table 3 shows some examples of 8-DOX products from fungi. 

Some oil compositions may not add to 100% due to the presence of minor fatty acids. Contains 87% OH-bearing ricinoleic acid (Cl 8 1).
