Rhodium carbonylation complex

An early attempt to hydroformylate butenediol using a cobalt carbonyl catalyst gave tetrahydro-2-furanmethanol (95), presumably by aHybc rearrangement to 3-butene-l,2-diol before hydroformylation. Later, hydroformylation of butenediol diacetate with a rhodium complex as catalyst gave the acetate of 3-formyl-3-buten-l-ol (96). Hydrogenation in such a system gave 2-methyl-1,4-butanediol (97). [Pg.107]

Polymer-supported catalysts incorporating organometaUic complexes also behave in much the same way as their soluble analogues (28). Extensive research has been done in attempts to develop supported rhodium complex catalysts for olefin hydroformylation and methanol carbonylation, but the effort has not been commercially successful. The difficulty is that the polymer-supported catalysts are not sufftciendy stable the valuable metal is continuously leached into the product stream (28). Consequendy, the soHd catalysts fail to eliminate the problems of corrosion and catalyst recovery and recycle that are characteristic of solution catalysis. [Pg.175]

C-19 dicarboxyhc acid can be made from oleic acid or derivatives and carbon monoxide by hydroformylation, hydrocarboxylation, or carbonylation. In hydroformylation, ie, the Oxo reaction or Roelen reaction, the catalyst is usually cobalt carbonyl or a rhodium complex (see Oxo process). When using a cobalt catalyst a mixture of isomeric C-19 compounds results due to isomerization of the double bond prior to carbon monoxide addition (80). [Pg.63]

Three of the rhodium(I) carbonyl complexes are particularly important and are selected for special study. [Pg.98]

Rhodium catalyzed carbonylations of olefins and methanol can be operated in the absence of an alkyl iodide or hydrogen iodide if the carbonylation is operated in the presence of iodide-based ionic liquids. In this chapter, we will describe the historical development of these non-alkyl halide containing processes beginning with the carbonylation of ethylene to propionic acid in which the omission of alkyl hahde led to an improvement in the selectivity. We will further describe extension of the nonalkyl halide based carbonylation to the carbonylation of MeOH (producing acetic acid) in both a batch and continuous mode of operation. In the continuous mode, the best ionic liquids for carbonylation of MeOH were based on pyridinium and polyalkylated pyridinium iodide derivatives. Removing the highly toxic alkyl halide represents safer, potentially lower cost, process with less complex product purification. [Pg.329]

The bluish white, hard, yet ductile, metal is inert to all acids and highly non-abrasive. Used for heavy-duty parts in electrical contacts and spinning jets. Reflectors are prepared from the mirror-smooth surfaces (e.g. head mirrors in medicine). Thin coatings provide a corrosion-resistant protective layer, for example, for jewelry, watches, and spectacle frames. The metal is a constituent of three-way catalysts. Rhodium complexes are used with great success in carbonylations (reactions with CO) and oxidations (nitric acid) in industry. Platinum-rhodium alloys are suitable thermocouples. [Pg.135]

Rhodium compounds have also been used as catalysts since the late 1960s and mechanistic studies date from the 1970s.534,578-582 The binuclear rhodium complex [(Ph3P)4Rh2(//-OH)2] was found to be an effective catalyst for the reductive carbonylation of nitrobenzenes to carbamate esters. Mannig and Noth reported the first example of rhodium-catalyzed hydroboration to C=C bonds in 1985.4 Catecholborane reacts at room temperature with 5-hexene-2-one at the carbonyl double bond when the reaction was run in the presence of 5mol.% Wilkinson s catalyst [Rh(PPh3)3Cl], addition of the B—H bond across the C=C double bond was observed affording the anti-Markovnikoff ketone as the major product (Scheme 2). Other rhodium complexes showed good catalytic properties ([Rh(COD)Cl2]2, [ Rh(PPh3)2(C O )C 1], where... [Pg.266]

The [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-induced ring fission of substituted cyclopropanes 8a-b affords the rhodium complexes 9a-b via carbonylation [8]. The regioselectivity of carbonyl group insertion depends on the substituent. Reduction with NaBH4 leads to the corresponding alcohol. (Scheme 4)... [Pg.109]

One of the only examples of a commercial process using immobilised homogeneous catalysts comprises an anionic rhodium complex [RhI2(CO)2] that is bound via ionic interactions to an ion exchange resin [3] and is used for the carbonylation of methanol. [Pg.60]

An anionic rhodium iodide carbonyl complex was supported on polyvinylpyrrolidone for the carbonylation of methanol in the presence of scC02 [98], Depending on the reaction conditions and method of extraction, less than 0.08% rhodium leaching was observed. Saturation of the support with methyl iodide was found to be vital to enhance the longevity and recyclability of the catalyst. [Pg.231]

Itaconic acid was hydrogenated rapidly to a 20% ee, and kinetic and spectrophotometric studies on this system were interpreted in terms of a mechanism involving a standard unsaturate route [cf. Eq. (5)]. The actual catalyst was thought to be HRh(DIOP)(DIOP ), where DIOP represents a monodentate DIOP with one dangling —CH2PPh2 moiety (273, 275). Rhodium(I) carbonyls (276) and ruthenium(II) complexes (90, 275) (Section III,B) containing monodentate DIOP have been isolated. [Pg.352]

A number of catalysts are known to effect homogeneous hydrogenation of aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g., some oxidized rhodium complexes (/, p. 238), some rhodium 7r-complexes with phenyl carboxylates (/, p. 283), some Ziegler systems (/, p. 363), and Co2(CO)8 (/, p. 173). However, the catalysts in the first three systems are not well characterized, and the carbonyl systems require fairly severe hydroformylation conditions, although they are reasonably selective, possibly via radical pathways (Section II, C). [Pg.376]
