Rhodium complex-catalyzed carbonylation supported

Rhodium(II) acetate catalyzes C—H insertion, olefin addition, heteroatom-H insertion, and ylide formation of a-diazocarbonyls via a rhodium carbenoid species (144—147). Intramolecular cyclopentane formation via C—H insertion occurs with retention of stereochemistry (143). Chiral rhodium (TT) carboxamides catalyze enantioselective cyclopropanation and intramolecular C—N insertions of CC-diazoketones (148). Other reactions catalyzed by rhodium complexes include double-bond migration (140), hydrogenation of aromatic aldehydes and ketones to hydrocarbons (150), homologation of esters (151), carbonylation of formaldehyde (152) and amines (140), reductive carbonylation of dimethyl ether or methyl acetate to 1,1-diacetoxy ethane (153), decarbonylation of aldehydes (140), water gas shift reaction (69,154), C—C skeletal rearrangements (132,140), oxidation of olefins to ketones (155) and aldehydes (156), and oxidation of substituted anthracenes to anthraquinones (157). Rhodium-catalyzed hydrosilation of olefins, alkynes, carbonyls, alcohols, and imines is facile and may also be accomplished enantioselectively (140). Rhodium complexes are moderately active alkene and alkyne polymerization catalysts (140). In some cases polymer-supported versions of homogeneous rhodium catalysts have improved activity, compared to their homogenous counterparts. This is the case for the conversion of alkenes direcdy to alcohols under oxo conditions by rhodium—amine polymer catalysts... [Pg.181]

Another approach, developed by Chiyoda/UOP, uses a rhodium catalyst heterogenized on a polymeric cation exchange resin. This takes advantage of the fact that the rhodium catalyzed carbonylation involves anionic complexes (see Section 4.2.5 below). The Chiyoda/UOP Acetica process employs a cross-linked polyvinylpyridine which is quaternized by methyl iodide to generate cationic pyridinium sites and which hold the anionic rhodium complexes by electrostatic interactions. The polymer support is tolerant of elevated temperatures and the ionic attachment of the catalyst is quite robust, resulting in only... [Pg.123]

Another example of successful SILP gas-phase reaction is the rhodium-catalyzed carbonylation of methanol [37]. The technical importance of this reaction is indicated by the Monsanto process, the dominant industrial process for the production of acetic acid (and methyl acetate), carried out on a large scale as a homogeneous liquid-phase reaction [38]. Using [Rh(CO)2l2] anions as the catalyticaUy active species, Riisager and coworkers have developed a new silica SILP Monsanto-type catalyst system [39] 21, in which the active rhodium catalyst complex is part of the IL itself. The SILP system was prepared by a one-step impregnation of the silica support using a methanoUc solution of the IL [BMIM]I and the dimeric precursor species [Rh(CO)2l]2, as depicted in Scheme 15.5. [Pg.322]

This led in turn to the idea to also use combinations of different metals (e.g., Co/Rh, Co/Pt, Co/Fe, Co/Mo, Rh/Fe, Rh/Mn, Rh/Re, Rh/W, Rh/Mo) with the aim of creating synergy effects [2]. In the last decade, especially G arland and coworkers accumulated much evidence through spectroscopic measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations that in rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of non-isomerizable olefins (cyclopentene or 3,3-dimethylbut-l-ene), carbonyl complexes, which are less active in hydroformylation, such as HMn(CO)5 or FIRe(CO)5 [3], can support the reductive elimination of the aldehyde from... [Pg.9]
