Rewards social life

The common features of emotion and addiction must be seen against the background of two important differences. Emotions are natural and universal. Without asserting that there are some emotions that are found in all societies, it can be safely said that all societies feature some emotions. Addiction is artificial and nonuniversal, an accident of the interaction between brain reward machinery evolved for other purposes and certain chemical substances. At the same time, emotions are much more belief dependent than addictive cravings and drug-induced states. Because social life is embedded in an extraordinarily dense network of beliefs, emotions are central to all human activities. In comparison, the role of cognition and even perception in addiction is sharply limited. [Pg.272]

An important sub-variety of rational action is strategic behaviour, that is choices that take account of the conjectured or anticipated choices of other agents. The incorporation of the strategic aspect into rational-choice theory allows one to formulate three sets of interdependencies that pervade social life, (i) The reward of each depends on the rewards of all, by envy, altruism or solidarity. (ii) The reward of each depends on the choices of all, by general social causality. (Hi) The choice of each depends on the choices of all, by strategic reasoning. The third objection above can Chen be restated as follows rational-choice theory is not able to take into account that (tv) the preferences of each depend on the actions of all. ... [Pg.10]

Safety justice derives from social justice which is to ensure social members get their due rewards or punishment, and to ensure the basic rights of social members (the right to survival and development). The primary value of equalization of safety in the whole work safety field is to safeguard mine workers life safety. From a macro perspective, it involves the issues of structural balance and equality, ie. resources and opportunities justly deployed for mine workers. [Pg.760]
