Retrograde rotation

Uranus The temperature in the Uranus atmosphere, which consists of molecular hydrogen containing around 12% helium, is close to 60 K. A methane cloud layer has been detected in the lower layers of this atmosphere. The planet is surrounded by a magnetosphere which extends into space for about ten times the diameter of Uranus. The planet has 27 moons of various sizes and is surrounded by a ring system which consists of thin dark rings. The planet is unusual in two respects its tilted axis and retrograde rotation. [Pg.58]

In Be stars, the uniform rotation have been shown to be unstable in the presence of a prograde and a retrograde mode. Kooiman separated exocellular amylose formed in liquid media at pH < 5 by Cryptococcus albidus and Cryptococcus laurentii var. flavescens NRRL Y-1401 from a polysaccharide containing D-man-nose, D-xylose, and D-glucuronic acid. Triton is of special interest to scientists because of a number of unusual characteristics. In the first place, it is the only satellite in the solar system to revolve around its parent planet in a retrograde motion—that is, in a direction opposite to that of the planet s rotation. In addition, it is only one of three bodies in the solar system (Earth and Titan being the others) with an atmosphere consisting primarily of nitrogen gas. Triton s atmosphere is very thin, with a surface pressure of only 14 microbars, about 0.0014 percent that on Earth. Also, Triton is the coldest body ever measured in the solar system, with a surface temperature of 38 K (- 235" C). At that temperature, nitrogen is frozen, so that Triton s atmosphere consists primarily of thin clouds made of nitrogen ice and the surface is covered with a thin layer of nitrogen frost. [Pg.162]
