Leachianone I (788) [343] and the lanvandulylated flavanone glucoside 789 [307] are examples of flavonostilbene in which flavanone gets condensed with a resveratrol (1) through the B ring. Compound 789 is the first occurrence of a flavanostilbene glycoside [307]. 

Red sandalwood Pterocarpus santalinus has attracted interest as a colourant and contains the colourless components, pterostilbene (34), pterocarpin (35) and homopterocarpin (36) the occurrence of which (ref. 101)and the chemistry (ref. 102) have been reviewed. The nature of the possible involvement of these compounds in the development of colour in sandalwood is not known although quinone and quinone dimer structures seem highly probable. Pterostilbene is the dimethyl ether of resveratrole, a natural widely-occurring phenolic component of many plants including grapes, mulberries and peanuts. Resveratrol (Fig. 23), a stilbene found in many food sources, e.g., peanuts and red wine, is assumed to have multiple benefits on human health. Most attention has been received by the so-called French paradox , the low occurrence of cardiovacular disease in populations living on a diet high in saturated fats, but consuming red wine. The protective effect of red wine is attributed to its proanthocyanidin and resveratrol contents. Possible mechanisms disscussed are the inhibition of oxidation of LDL cholesterol and platelet aggregation. Resveratrol may also increase longevity by activation of sirtuins, NAD+-dependent protein deacetylases involved in aging, which respond to oxidative stress and are induced by a low-calory diet.
