The hyperfine splittings in the e.s.r. spectra of radicals of the allylic type are considerably less than those of alkyl radicals, and for radicals trapped in their parent compounds the resolution is insufficient to determine all the hyperfine coupling constants. However, by use of the rotating cryostat, the unsubstituted radical and three methyl-substituted allyl radicals have been prepared in a matrix of adamantane and it has been possible to resolve all the hyperfine couplings. [Pg.21]

Two new bands — in-phase (ui) and out-of-phase (I ls) antisymmetric CH2 stretching vibrations of allyl radical have been obtained in the slit jet discharge spectrometer, as the sample spectra shown in the top panel of Fig. 5.18. The data have been successfully analyzed with a Watson asymmetric rotor Hamiltonian, yielding precise band origins and rotational constants for both bands. The high quality of least squares fits to ground state combination differences indicates that the rotational level structure in the lower state is well behaved, while the reduced quality of fits to the vibrational transitions, on the other hand, suggest the presence of Coriolis mediated rotational perturbations in the upper state. In a more recent study, blends of different PEs - including high-density (HD), low-density (LD) and linear low-density (LLD) PE - with polyamide 6 (PA6 20wt%) were y-irradiated with doses of up to 1000 kGy [88]. As seen from Figure 23.18, the EPR spectra of the three examined blends were similar multiplets, the resolution of which decreased in the order HDPE > LLDPE > LDPE.
