Residual organic matter

Analysis of the residual organic matter by Oil Show Analyzer. 

The evolution in the composition of the residual organic matter is studied by OSA in the coke zone and in all the zone ahead of the combustion front. Whatever the oil, in each sand sample, the amount of gaseous hydrocarbons (SO) is low because all the light hydrocarbons have been stripped by the gas flow.

Closer proximity of the Marcellus and Burket depositional basins to a terrestrial or littoral source of vegetative debris together with anaerobic stagnation of the sea are suggested as accounting for the greater content in Devonian residual organic matter than in the Ordovician deposits.

Approximately 20% of the available energy in the raw shale was not recovered, and it was questionable whether the residual organic matter could be economically recovered as process fuel.

The influence of the discharge is visible up to 30 m, mainly because of the presence of relatively high residual organic matter in treated wastewater (COD around 100 mg/L), due to the physico-chemical process of the treatment plant. The TSS concentration (around 30 mg/L) contributes to the turbidity effect in the mixture. The treatment plant extension that should include a biological process would lead to the reduction of wastewater impact in this sea area. 

Interferences which were encountered include broad-band absorption at the 253.7-nm mercury line caused by residual organic matter in the sample, fogging of the windows of the absorption cell by water vapor, and oxidizing materials in the sample which prevent the reduction of ionic mercury to elemental mercury by divalent tin. Careful control of the analytical conditions can overcome these interferences. 

The irradiation of ashed solutions using ultraviolet radiation has been proposed to get rid of any residual organic matter while carrying out determinations by voltammetric techniques (Nurnberg, 1981).
