Seshradi and coworkers showed that potassium carbonate was an effective base in the K-R reaction for the conversion of resacetophenone (37) to 7-hydroxyflavone 39a and 7-hydroxy-4 -methoxyflavone 39b in 57% and 46% yield, respectively. In addition, the reaction proceeded at a significantly lower temperature than the traditional K-R reaction by conducting the reaction in refluxing acetone.

Resacetophenone has been prepared by heating resorcinol with zinc chloride and acetic acid,1,2 with zinc chloride and acetic anhydride,2 and with zinc chloride and acetyl chloride.3 It has also been prepared by the action of zinc chloride on resorcinol diacetate,2 by heating 4-methylumbelliferone with potassium hydroxide,4 by heating resacetophenone carbonic acid,5 and by the action of acetyl chloride on resorcinol.6... 

Resacetophenone and phloroacetophenone can be prepared from resorcinol and phloroglucinol, respectively, and acetonitrile in good yield (0. S., XV., 70).

Nencki reacUon. The general reaction, zinc chloride-catalyzed acylation of a phenol, is illustrated by the conversion of resorcinol into resacetophenone and of pyrogallol into gallacetophenone. The procedures are similar except that acetic acid is used in the first and acetic anhydride in the second.
