EPA regulations also limit lead in drinking water to 0.015 milligrams per liter (mg/L). The 1988 Lead Contamination Control Act requires the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), EPA, and the states to recall or repair water coolers containing lead. This law also requires new coolers to be lead-free. In addition, drinking water in schools must be tested for lead, and the sources of lead in this water must be removed.

CPSC, FTC, DOT and many others. Most of us are so well acquainted with these types of regulations that they have become a day-to-day part of our activities. Because they are so familiar to us, we may miss the very significant distinction in this classification, the distinction between standards regulations and pre-market registration. 

Wearing apparel is regulated by CPSC and is covered since the promulgation of the Flammable Fabrics Act (FFA) in 1953, by a 45° angle flammability test for apparel fabrics (CS 191-53), which became effective in 1954, and is still valid, as 16 CFR 1610.12 The FFA later started covering other products. 

Flammability of children s sleepwear is regulated by CPSC and is also covered as a result of the FFA, since a small-scale vertical open flame ignition test was developed in 1971, as 16 CFR 1615.15 This was expanded to older children in 1974, as 16 CFR 1616.16... 

Smoldering ignition of mattresses is regulated by CPSC and is also covered by the FFA, since the smoldering test in 16 CFR 163217 was introduced in 1972.

Proposed fire safety regulations for upholstered furniture have existed since the CPSC issued various advanced notices of the proposed rulemaking in the 1990s and early 2000s, and a notice of the proposed rulemaking (NPRM) in 2007.21 However, no regulation exists in 2008. 

The USP is not the only body setting standards for drug packaging. In addition to the information contained in the USP, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) set packaging guidelines and regulations. 

The CPSC was created by Congress in 1972 and assumed, as one of its roles, the enforcement of the U.S. Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970 (16 C.F.R. 1700). " Since then, the regulatory breadth of CPSC has grown, but its impact on packaging still primarily pertains to the closures. The CPSC regulations can be found in 16 C.F.R. and specifically provide requirements for child-resistant and tamper-evident packaging systems. ... 

To carry out its mission, CPSC administers five statutes. They are (1) the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA), (2) the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA), (3) the Flammable Fabrics Act (FFA), (4) the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA), and (5) the Refrigerator Safety Act (RSA). Toxicological issues arise most frequently under the CPSA, FHSA, and PPPA. CPSC regulations implementing these statutes may be found at Title 16 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and are available on the Commission s website.
