Redwood viscometer

This empirical method is used in Europe but has little use in North America. Like the Saybolt method, this method measures the time for a fixed volume to flow out of a standard Redwood viscometer by the IP70 procedure and the result is reported in Redwood seconds. [Pg.24]

The Redwood viscometer is considered to be the first efflux viscometer developed, designed in the late 1800s by Redwood, and, after some modification, is still in use. The test procedure may be carried out according to CEN EN 16345 (2012). [Pg.185]

A modification of the Ostwald viscometer is the Redwood viscometer, used for very viscous liquids. This viscometer consists of an open cup, through the centre of the base of which is an accurately bored hole fitted with a valve. The cup is filled to a given mark with liquid, the valve is opened, and the time taken for a given volume of liquid to discharge is noted. [Pg.161]

Redwood viscometers are available in two sizes — No. 1 (Universal) and No. 2 (Admirality). The two viscometers, RWl and RW2, are identical in principle, shape and method of testing a sample. The difference lies in the dimensions of die dischaige capillary (tube/jet/orifice) ... [Pg.87]

Flow through a porous cell has been used in the viscometry of mobile liquids. The older types of viscometer used in testing lubricating oils, such as those of Redwood, 3 Engler, etc., in which a liquid flows through a small hole in the bottom of a vessel, have no scientific interest, and are being replaced by instruments of the type described above. [Pg.82]

Although it is considered a technical advantage to specify kinematic viscosity, the conventional viscometers are still in wide use and it may be convenient, or even necessary, to be able to convert viscosities from one system to another. Provision is made (ASTM D-2161) for the conversion of kinematic viscosity to Saybolt Universal and Furol viscosity and (in IP standards) for conversion to Redwood viscosity ... [Pg.240]

It Is unfortunate that the description of his viscometer, and the emphasis on laminar flow appeared too late to Influence Redwood, Eagler and Saybolt who designed orifice viscometers In the mid 1880 s. (Ref. 4 Chapter 2). [Pg.4]
