Red orpiment

Synonyms arsenic disulfide arsenic monosulfide red arsenic sulfide ruby arsenic realgar red orpiment. 

According to Ellern (Ref 3, p 135) the sulfide ( ... red orpiment.. ) is included in a marine handlight pyrot compn called .. . ships blue lights... along with K nitrate and S. Generally, either a blue fire or an intense white flame results from incorporation of the disulfide into pyrots (Ref 5)... 

The confusion began with the Arabs, who call Sandarac Varnish Resin, or juniper Resin, while Sandaraca they called Red Metallic Orpiment. Some have even gone so far as to believe that common Painters Varnish was true Metallic Sandarac. Metallic Sandarac is not found in our Laboratories. Pliny states that Native Sandarac is produced in the Island of Topazo in the Red Sea, but that it is not exported.

MICHAElspaCBER 1616 gives the sigil next to the sign or constellation Virgo, perhaps to symbolise the alchemical process of distinction, or (less likely) the alchemical RED ORPIMENT. 

Compounds of Arsenic and Sulfur.—Arsenic disulfld—Bed sul-fid of arsenic—Realgar—Red orpiment—Ruby sulfur—Sandarach —AsjSj—214—occurs in nature, in translucent, ruby-red crystals. It is also prepared by heating a mixture of AsjO] and S. As so obtained it appears in brick-red masses. 

Red orpiment has been used synonymously for realgar q.v. FilzHugh, 1997). However, Field (1835) says that this is incorrect and that it should be called orange orpiment.
