Recycling acid plant performance

Effect of first catalyst exit gas recycle on overall acid plant performance... [Pg.318]

Table 9.1 summarizes catalyst compositions and corresponding performances. The oxidation of ethane to acetic acid is now commercial an industrial plant is installed, with the technology developed by Saudi Basic. Elements that have contributed to the successful development of the process are (1) the discovery of a catalytically active compound, the multifunctional properties of which can be modified and tuned to be adapted to reaction conditions through incorporation of various elements (2) the stability of the main products, ethylene and acetic acid, which do not undergo extensive consecutive degradation reactions (3) the possibility of recycling the unconverted reactant and the major by-product, ethylene (4) the use of reaction conditions that minimize the formation of CO and (5) an acceptable overall process yield. [Pg.294]

Ammonification is the process by which the organically bound nitrogen of microbial, plant, and animal biomass is recycled after their death. Ammonification is carried out by a diverse array of microorganisms that perform ecological decay services, and its product is ammonia or ammonium ion. Ammonium is a suitable source of nutrition for many species of plants, especially those living in acidic soils. However, most plants cannot utilize ammonium effectively, and they require nitrate as their essential source of nitrogen nutrition. [Pg.564]

Another conventional battery technology that has been considered for EVs is Ni/Cd. Although capable of somewhat better performance than lead-acid in some respects, this battery is also more costly and does not equal the performance levels possible with advanced battery systems. It is unlikely to see widespread use in EV applications in the U.S. although there are reported to be more than 10,000 EVs using Ni/Cd batteries presently on the road in Europe [23]. Because of the toxicity of cadmium, which precludes disposal, and the value of the nickel, there are well-developed processes for recycling of Ni/Cd batteries. Most of the facilities in Europe are dedicated Ni/Cd battery recycling plants. [Pg.314]
