Before the invention of the mechanical and chemical pulping processes in the 19th century, rags (used textiles) tvere the only raw fiber source. The development of the worldwide use of fibrous raw material since 1980 is shown in Table 2.1. Research Trends. Research since the late 1970s appears to have centered on further process modifications and optimization of conventional processes, reduction in pollution, evaluation of potentially more efficient processing technology, increased use of less expensive softwood sources to extend the available hardwood suppHes, and accommodation of recycled newspaper pulp (see Recycling, paper). 

Both of these types of pulps offer a variety of microbiological problems with the most severe being from the recycled paper types. The microbiological problems encountered are both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria which can develop at different stages of the pulping... 

A major movement within the pulp and paper industry has been an increased focus on the use of recovered paper. Nearly 50% of paper is now recovered and used either as recycled paper or as products such as home insulation. Furthermore, recovered paper contributes to U.S. exports roughly ten million tons of recovered paper were exported in 2000.1... 

In case that corrugated base papers are not any more produced from recycled paper, as it is typical for testliner and medium in Germany, virgin fibres would have to be used. Lime is employed in the krafl pulping process to be discussed in detail in Chapter 22, Section 3.1. Most of it is recycled. Without this recycling the pulp and paper industry would be the largest lime user. The main reaction of lime in the krafl process is for the purpose of regenerating caustic soda (sodium hydroxide).
