Plug Cocks These valves (Fig. 10-152) are limited to temperatures below 260°C (500°F) since differential expansion between the plug and the body results in seizure. The size and shape of the port divide these valves into different types. In order of increasing cost they are short venturi, reduced rectangular port long venturi, reduced rec taugular port full rectangular port and full round port. 

The rectangular element valve, as the name implies, uses rectangular-shaped sealing elements. These valves are the feather valve, channel valve, and the reed valve. These valves are applied to the industrial air machines for the most part. A channel valve is shown in Figure 3-10. 

Note In Table 8-22 for Ry, the flat orifice refers to a rectangular design valve and the venturi refers to a circular style valve. 

All reagent fluids are first mixed at predetermined pressure and temperature in a mixing tank before they are sent through an inlet gas control valve into an auxiliary preheater and the reactor. The latter is a refractory-1ined, rectangular sheet-metal vessel and after a coal block has been closely fitted into the reactor, one or more 3A" " 2" diameter horizontal holes, which serve as initial reaction channels, and appropriately placed vertical injection and production holes are drilled into it. 

Rectangular copper pans with crowned bottoms have also been substituted for the hemispherical pans with cocks or valves, to empty them from the bottom. They are ranged side by side over the furnace, so that the flame runs under them from end to end and there being no side flues, the metal of the pans does not become heated, and consequently the quality of. the sugar is not injured. 

Almost all lead-acid battery cases are rectangular (prismatic) in shape. The interior may be manufactured with projections to locate the plates and support them above the case floor, in order to leave mud or sludge space where shed materials can accumulate (Fig. 5.9). In other batteries the plates are suspended from the case lid or from a ledge in the case wall. The lid is welded or sealed to the case and is provided with apertures for terminal pillars, venting valves and simple screw caps or complex automatic systems for adding distilled water to the elctrolyte. 

Figures 6.3 and 6.4 show different types of valve trays and valve units. Valves can be round or rectangular, with or without a caging structure. A detailed description is available elsewhere (1), and in manufacturers literature (7-9). The valve disks rise as vapor rate is increased (Fig. 6.2c), The upper limit of opening is controlled by a caging structure or by restrictive legs at the bottom of the valve unit. Tests by Banik (72) and Zhang et al. (70) show that weeping from valve trays is nonuniform. In Banik s 4 ft x 2 ft rectangular simulator, most of the weep issued from the inlet half of the tray at low liquid rates (< 3 gpm/in of outlet weir) and from the outlet half of the tray ax high liquid rates (>10 gpm/in of outlet weir). The nonuniformity appeared to escalate as weir height increased. This pattern of nonuniformity is similar to that observed by Banik and Lockett (56) on sieve trays.
