Recombination events

Light is generated in semiconductors in the process of radiative recombination. In a direct semiconductor, minority carrier population created by injection in a forward biased p-n junction can recombine radiatively, generating photons with energy about equal to E. The recombination process is spontaneous, individual electron-hole recombination events are random and not related to each other. This process is the basis of LEDs [36]. 

The helicases are enzymes central to life itself. The nature of double-stranded DNA means that before a polymerase can begin to copy the appropriate region of the nucleic acid, the two strands have to be unwound the separation of the two strands is the function of the helicase (Fig. 2). An indication of the significance of this family of enzymes is seen in the so-called Werner syndrome, where the helicase function required in the suppression of inappropriate recombination events is defective and causes genomic instability and cancer (for a review see Cobb and Bjergbaek 2006). 

Luntz and co-workers have recently carried out an impressive study that follows in the spirit of the Eley-Rideal work.44 Specifically, laser-assisted recombination of N-atoms desorbing to form gas-phase N2 on Ru(0001) was investigated. Experimental measurements of state-selectively detected N2 recoiling from the surface recombination event were obtained using resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization and ion time-of-flight methods. In this way translational energy distributions of individual rovibrational states could be obtained experimentally. In addition, N2-vibrational population distributions could be derived. 

The various observations leave little doubt that recombination of rare-gas dimer ions can produce excited atoms, but it is quite possible that formation of radiating excited states occurs only in a small fraction of recombination events. The repeat gene family tandem repeats may increase both intra- and intermolecular recombination events, which result in gene or epitope amplification that is usually followed by sequence divergence. This could be another strategy of adaptation by the virus to keep pace with its evolving host. Because of its potentially large size and sequence diversity, the 540-bp repeat gene family will presumably play an important role. Based upon predicted properties, the 540-bp repeat proteins are believed to function differently than those of the cysteine-rich family.
