Figure 7-4 Slurry reactor (left) for well-mixed gas-solid reactions and fluidized bed reactor (center) for liquid-solid reactions. At the right is shown a riser reactor in which the catalyst is carried with the reactants and separated and returned to the reactor. The slurry reactor is generally mixed and is described by the CSTR model, while the fluidized bed is described by the PFTR or CSTR models. Chemical analyses by INAA were conducted at the Archaeometry Laboratory at the Missouri University Research Reactor Center (MURR). Aliquots of sample were oven-dried at 100 °C for 24 h. Amounts of approximately 150 mg were weighed into small polyvials used for short irradiations. At the same time, 200 mg of each sample was weighed into high-purity quartz vials used for long irradiations. Along with the majolica samples, reference standards of SRM-I633a (coal fly ash) and SRM-688 (basalt rock) were similarly prepared, as well as quality control samples of SRM-278 (obsidian rock) and Ohio Red Clay (standards treated as unknowns). [Pg.380]

A swimming-pool reactor produces a flux of 3 x lo thermal neutrons m s at 1 m from the reactor center. Assuming a parallel beam of neutrons diffusing up to the surface of the pool where the neutron flux is measured to be 10 n m s, calculate the thickness (x m) of the water layer required. For thermal neutrons the flux is reduced exponentially with the exponent x L, where L is the diffusion length (2.75 cm in HjO). [Pg.164]

Beretta et al. [65] decreased the hot spot formation of their ceramic monoliths for the partial oxidation of methane by decreasing the cell density from 400 to 115 cpsi, which increased the channel size consequently. Therefore mass transfer limitations occurred, which reduced the oxygen consumption at the channel inlet and pushed the oxidation reaction toward the reactor center the hot spot was reduced from 900 to 750° C by these means (Figure 14.6). [Pg.338]

Answer The "small piles" concept is merely a method of visualizing the entire reactor as being made up of, for example, eight blocks or cubes of equal size, each of which must be controlled to run smoothly at optir. jm level. Fo ur of these "small piles" would then be to the rear of reactor center and fo or to the front, four above center and fc ar below center, etc. [Pg.50]

Open channels have been provided for the horisontal control and safety rods. Moderator cooling tubes have been provided in the filler blocks on both sides of the horisontal rod channels except for the front most and rear most colusms of rods. For these columns, cooling tubes are supplied only on the side nearer the reactor center heat generation rates will be lower at the front and rear of the reactor, reducing the need for cooling. [Pg.44]
