Reaction of Carbon Dioxide with Magnesium

Material Cylinder, glass plate, crucible tongs magnesium ribbon, carbon dioxide gas, sand. [Pg.60]

Procedure Place a 1-cm layer of sand in the cylinder as a protector for the bottom of the cylinder. Fill the cylinder with carbon dioxide by replacing the air and cover it with a glass plate. Hold a 10-cm piece of magnesium ribbon using crucible tongs, carefully light it and place it deep within the cylinder, taking care not to touch the cylinder. [Pg.60]

Observation The flame does not extinguish but continues burning with a crackling noise. On the inside of the cylinder, one can see black dots. When retrieving with one s finger, it is obvious it is soot that can color white paper black carbon. [Pg.60]
