As impressive as living cells are in manufacturing the proteins they need, they have certain inherent limitations. Specifically, they make only the proteins they need for their own survival and reproduction. They do not make other kinds of proteins that people might find helpful and desirable for other purposes. For example, humans might really like to have a protein molecule with an active site that could recognize and bind to a molecule of RDX explosive. Such a protein might be a powerful tool in efforts to detect the presence of RDX in locations where it ought not to he, such as commercial airports.

The assassination attempt on President Reagan involved the use of Devastator exploding bullets. These consisted of standard 0.22 LR caliber, copper-coated lead hollow point bullets, modified by deep drilling to accept a tiny aluminum alloy canister containing about 24 mg of lead azide. Nitrocellulose lacquer was used to seal the base of the canister. RDX explosive was originally used in these loads but was replaced by lead azide.76,77...

Firing system and detonators Simultaneously initiate the LSC and CSC charges. Reynolds type RP-85 EBW detonators for LSC. For CSCs, Reynolds type RP-1 and RP-2 EBW detonators are used. These contain RDX explosive.
