It seems that drug action on the nongrowing cells might have more of an effect on the Rec bacteria. In addition, the detection sensitivity increases for typical chemical mutagens, as shown in Table 2. 

Besides water, available solvents are dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), acetone, and ethyl acetate, which scarcely inhibit either Rec or Rec bacteria, though no-drug control experiments must be carried out.
