Ralston Purina

Extmsion processing is highly automated. Some extmders may process over 9 t/h, and in one Ralston Purina plant (Davenport, Iowa) 30 extmders were operating in a single location. With computer assistance, one person can operate many different extmders, and several different foods can be produced simultaneously. These maybe different formulations or different colors and shapes to be packaged singly or combined into one variety pack. The differences in variety may be attributable only to added colors or different shapes. [Pg.149]

Taurine [107-35-7] (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid), is the only known naturally occurring sulfonic acid. The material is an essential amino acid for cats and is used extensively by Ralston Purina Company as a food supplement in cat food manufacture. Approximately 5,000—6,000 t of taurine (synthetic and natural) were produced in 1993 50% for pet food manufacture, 50% in pharmaceutical applications (114). [Pg.102]

Animals Male, Sprague-Dawley rats (COBS-CD strain) were purchased at five weeks of age from Charles River Breeding Laboratories, Wilmington, MA. The animals were maintained for two weeks on Rat Chow (Purina Lab Chow, Ralston Purina Company, St. Louis, MO). Following the two-week pretreatment, the animals were weighed and distributed into treatment groups as described in Table I. [Pg.468]

Male Sprague Dawley rats, seven days post weanling (Bantin and Kingman, Inc., Fremont, CA) were fed pelleted rodent chow (5001, Ralston Purina Co., St. Louis, MO) or modified AIN-76 diets (BioServ, Inc., Frenchtown, NJ) with or without added sulfur amino acids. Chow, diets, and water were supplied to the rats ad libitum. The AIN-76 diet (16) was modified to contain 12% casein (normally 20% casein), and the weight difference made up with cornstarch. The normal methionine supplement was not included. The cornstarch and sucrose portions were held separately from the casein/vitamin/mineral (CVM) mixture for the purpose of mixing amino acids with the cornstarch and sucrose (CsS). Methionine (MET), methionine sulfoxide (MSO) and cysteine sulfinic acid (CSA) were obtained from Sigma Chemical Co., St. Louis, MO. Cysteine monoxide (CMO) was prepared by the method of Savige et al., (17). [Pg.157]

Materials. The soy protein isolate used in all experiments was Purina 500 E from Ralston Purina, a type of nonhydrolysed soy isolate which is generally used in the European meat industry. Gelatin (alkaline extracted) was obtained from Extraco, Sweden. [Pg.126]

A brief description of the yellow fevet mosquito (Aedes aegyptl (L.)) larvicide test follows. An acetone solution (0.5 ml) containing the appropriate amount of test compound was added to a mixture of distilled water (49.5 ml), Tween 80 (25 mg), and a single pellet of rabbit chow (Ralston-Purina). Twenty late-4th instars (5-6 days posthatch) were added to this medium and the medium was Incubated at 27 C. [Pg.275]

Everted intestinal sacs were prepared following the method developed by Wilson and Wiseman (25). Rats (mean weight of 210g, Slmonsen Laboratories, Gilroy, C ) which were fed a chow diet (Ralston Purina, Inc., St. Louis, MO), were killed by a blow to the head after a 13 hour fast. The small intestine was sectioned at a distance of 10% of the total length of the intestine from pylorus to the ileo-caecal junction. Any residual, undigested food was washed out with chilled 0.9% NaQ before the intestine... [Pg.191]

The authors acknowledge the assistance of Thomas R. Romer, of Romer s Lab, Inc., for the early work done on gas chromatography separation of the derivatized trichothecenes, for his assistance in the procurement of samples and standards. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (180-240g), obtained from Harlan Industries, Inc. (Indianapolis, IN, U.S.A.), were fed Purina Rat Chow (Ralston Purina Co., Richmond, IN, U.S.A.) and water ad libitum. On the day of the experiment, rats were killed by decapitation and their livers were removed rapidly for preparation of mitochondria. [Pg.33]

Diet groups based on defined diets from Ralston Purina. Each group value is the mean SEM for six rats. The diets are compared to the chow group using the Student s t test. NSD is not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The data and experimental detail are from Ref. 28. [Pg.127]
