If there is simultaneous qi vacuity, add Radix Astragali Membranacei (Huang Qi). 

If there is excessive sweating, increase the dosage of Peony and decrease by one-third the dosages of Cinnamon, Ginger, and Licorice. Then add Radix Astragali Membranacei Huang Qi) and Radix Ledebouriellae Sesloidis FangFeng).

For lung qi and exterior vacuity, add Fructus Schizandrae Chinensis Wu Wei Zi) and Radix Astragali Membranacei Huang Qi). 

For qi vacuity and spleen weakness with borborygmus and loose stools, subtract Mint and add Radix Astragali Membranacei Huang Qi), Rhizoma Cimicifugae Sheng Ma), and mix-fried Radix Glycyrrhizae Zhi Gan Cao). 

For more serious qi and blood vacuity with cold limbs, add Si Wu Tang plus Cortex Cinnamomi (Ron Gui) and Radix Astragali Membranacei (Huang Qi). This results in Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Ten Complete Great Supplementing Decoction). 

For weakness of the spleen and dampness with vomiting, diarrhea, and poor appetite, add Radix Astragali Membranacei (Huang Qi) and Semen Dolichos Lablabis (Bai Bian Dou). 

For menopausal fatigue, add Radix Astragali Membranacei Huang Qi) and Radix Panacis Ginseng (Ren Shen).

For more prominent spleen vacuity with pronounced lack of appetite and fatigue but less distention and fullness, replace Atractylodis with Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Bai Zhu) and add Radix Astragali Membranacei Huang Qi) and Radix Dioscoreae Oppositae (Shan Yao). 

In the early 90 s, a clinical trial on Feibao syrup , which contains H. diffusa together with Radix astragali and other medicinal plant extracts, was reported. In this study, Feibao syrup was used to treat reversal respiratory tract infection in children. The clinical research proved that after taking the medicine, the general condition was improved and if the disease occurred, the symptoms were mild and the disease course was short. The efficacy of the medicine was 92.5%. Furthermore, experiment on mice indicated that the medicine could enhance the macrophage phagocytic activity and lymphocyte transformation rate [41].
