53 Radiochemical Transformations (Radiolysis) of Hyaluronan Aqueous Solutions 

It is worth mentioning that if the aqueous solutions saturated with air are exposed by ionized irradiation, additional particles O and CO are formed that participate in polysaccharide radiolysis as well. The majority of researchers confirm that the reactivity of the radical particles formed during irradiation decreases in the series OH e C02 02 [73]. 

Radiolysis of hyaiuronan aqueous solutions could be described as destructive oxidative processes in which hydroxyl radical OH plays the major role. Therefore, any processes that lead to the formation of the hydroxyl radical, whether in scientific experiment or in nature, will be accompanied by the irreversible destruction of the HA with the formation of low molecular weight fragments of different chemical structures. Understanding of the mechanism of radiolysis of hyaiuronan is necessary in order to develop a strategy to protect the polysaccharide from the destructive effects of oxidative radicals.
