D/L enantiomers increases with time. This racemization of amino acids is used for amino acid racemization dating (see Pollard and Heron 1996, 271 301). [Pg.274]

Problems remain, and differing lines of evidence suggest that racemization dating of bone is, at best, tentative, and that many of the early dates for human skeletons are wrong. For instance, the Sunnyvale skeleton (racemization dated at 70,000 years B.P.) is morphologically indistinguishable for skeletons dated between 400 and 1600 years B.P. (10). Another important and controversial skeleton was described in Denver. Bada and Masters presented the results of a detailed study of the general composition and extent of racemization of amino acids isolated from the Del Mar Man skeleton (11). [Pg.19]

Amino Acid Racemization Dating of Bone and Shell... [Pg.117]

Although the first demonstration that amino acid racemization took place in fossils used mollusc shells (23), the application of this reaction in dating these materials has been extensively investigated only recently (19,20). Work on Mercenaria (19), Chione (20), and other species (24) has tested the application of racemization dating to fossil mollusc shells from geological contexts and Indian shell middens. These and other studies have shown that there are problems with amino acid racemization dating of carbonaceous fossils which are not encountered with bone. Reversible first-order racemization kinetics which are observed in bone... [Pg.119]

Aspartic acid has been the amino acid most extensively used in racemization dating of fossil bone. The reaction can be written as ... [Pg.120]

Amino acid racemization dates on bone have been reported for 36 sites throughout the world (14-18,80-32). At 25 of these localities, ages derived from independent evidence such as radiocarbon dating, geological interpretation, and historical records were available for comparison and agreed well with the racemization ages. Some of these comparisons are listed in Table I. [Pg.121]
