When John Phillips, in 1991, presented the practical possibility of acquiring a real comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatographic separation (33), the analytical chemists in the oil industry were quick to pounce upon this technique. Venkatramani and Phillips (34) subsequently indicated that GC X GC is a very powerful technique, which offers a very high peak capacity, and is therefore eminently suitable for analysing complex oil samples. These authors were able to count over 10 000 peaks in a GC X GC chromatogram of a kerosine. Blomberg, Beens and co-workers... [Pg.397]

The news spread quickly, and became charged with implications as Hitler s Nazis began their march through Europe. Two days before the outbreak of World War II in Europe in 1939, Bohr and John... [Pg.850]

One of the most important reasons for man s progress in understanding and controlling his environment is his ability to communicate knowledge to the next generation. It isn t necessary for each twentieth century scientist to invent the atomic description of matter. This was invented by John Dalton in the nineteenth century, and Dalton recorded his ideas in the scientific literature together with the observations that led him to the model. By study of this and subsequent literature a modern scientist can appraise the nature of the description, the facts it will explain, and the limitations. He is quickly able to approach the frontiers of knowledge—the frontiers defined by the limitations in our accepted models of the behavior of matter. [Pg.12]

FIGURE 7.11 Multimode assay based on UPLC/MS/MS system. A four-compound mixture was assayed in one injection. The mass spectrometer switched among the four ionization modes quickly. The ionization modes for the analytes are shown. (Source Adapted from Yu, K. et al., Rapid Commun. Mass Spectrom., 2007, 21, 893. With permission of John Wiley Sons.)... [Pg.225]

John Baugh knew that running local businesses from a central location would not be effective in the foodservice business and Rick Schnieders and Tom Lankford guard that entrepreneurship and autonomy zealously. Each of the company s operating subsidiaries maintains the autonomy to manage and operate their companies in an entrepreneurial fashion, allowing them to respond quickly to customer needs. [Pg.77]

Another important part of Organic 11 is carbonyl chemistry. We look at the basics of the carbonyls in Chapter 9. It s like a family reunion where 1 (John, one of your authors) grew up in North Carolina — everybody is related. You meet aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, acyl chlorides, esters, cimides, and on and on. It s a quick peek, because later we go back and examine many of these in detail. For example, in Chapter 10 you study aldehydes and ketones, along with some of the amines, while in Chapter 11 we introduce you to other carbonyl compounds, enols and enolates, along with nitroalkanes and nitriles. [Pg.15]

Carboxylic acids and their derivatives are also an important part of Organic 11. We spend quite a few pages looking at the structure, nomenclature, synthesis, reactions, and spectroscopy of carboxylic acids. While on this topic in Chapter 12, we use a lot of acid-base chemistry, most of which you were exposed to in your introductory chemistry course. (For a quick review, look over a copy of Chemistry For Dummies or Chemistry Essentials For Dummies, both written by John T. Moore and published by Wiley.)... [Pg.15]

When 129I was first shown by John Reynolds to be present in the early solar system (Reynolds, 1960), he quickly realized that the inferred initial ratio for the solar system ( 1 x 10-4) was well below that expected from stellar nucleosynthesis ( 1). He proposed a period of free decay between the last input of newly synthesized material and the formation of the solar system to explain the low observed ratio and estimated the free decay time at 3 x 108 years. As more realistic models of the expected abundances of radionuclides in interstellar space were developed, this interval decreased to 108 years. The curved solid lines in Figure 9.5 show the effect on the steady-state abundances of short-lived radionuclides of free decay intervals of 5 x 107 and 108 years. Nuclides with mean lives of less than 5 Myr would have completely decayed away. Thus, when Lee et al. (1977) discovered 26Al and... [Pg.312]

National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. Women under the Influence. Baltimore, Md. Johns Hopkins University Press, 2006. Focused on substance abuse among girls and women, this book includes a chapter on illicit use of prescription drugs. The research reported in the volume compares the addiction and abuse of women to that of men. Although women abuse drugs less than men, the problem remains a significant one. Women tend to become addicted more quickly than men and benefit from different types of treatments. [Pg.194]
